go robyn, it's your birthday {month}!

Hey hey folks, it's my birthday month! Yes, i just said that - birthday month! I turn 34 on June 13th, and while my original plans were for a super amazing lazer tag showdown with friends and family, being seven months pregnant has caused me to re-think things a bit.

Thankfully, right about the time I realized my dreams of lazer tag glory needed to be put on hold for a year, I remembered I could do something even more amazing for my birthday - I could give some folks clean drinking water!

charity: water, founded by a former NYC club promoter, brings clean water to folks all over the world by empowering folks just like me to help raise money. 100% of the money raised goes to building wells {they pay for staff and operations expenses thanks to a few specific donors} which means you don't have to worry how much of your $10 or $30 is going to actually bringing water to folks.

Why Water?

I forget how important water is. I drink it like a fool all day, every day. I love to take a long shower when I can. Our fruits and veggies are fed by water, and one of my favorite smells is springtime, just before a rain shower.

But folks around the world don't get many of these luxuries.

{from the charity: water website}

Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of diseases and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren't strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses.

90% of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are to children under five years old. Many of these diseases are preventable. The UN predicts that one tenth of the global disease burden can be prevented simply by improving water supply and sanitation.

In Africa alone, people spend 40 billion hours every year just walking for water. Women and children usually bear the burden of water collection, walking miles to the nearest source, which is unprotected and likely to make them sick.

Time spent walking and resulting diseases keep them from school, work and taking care of their families.

What I'm Doing To Help

Like I said, June is my birthday month - and I'm using it to do some good for the world! I'm committing to raise at least $3400 this month, to help build a well for folks who need it!

Thanks to charity: water, I've set up a page where folks can go to donate some money - you can donate as little as $1, or you can donate as much as you want!

My campaign is called "$3400 For My 34th", and my goal is to partner up with folks around me to raise at least that much money. To reach my goal, I need 100 friends to donate $34 each, or 200 friends to donate $17 each.

I truly believe this goal is totally do-able, and can't wait to watch as folks start to donate!

To sweeten the pot, I'm tacking on something else as well - free knitting patterns!

For folks that donate at least $1, I'll be sending you a coupon code, good for one free pattern of your choice from my pattern shop!

Folks that donate at least $25 will be eligible for two free patterns!

Folks that donate at least $50 will be eligible for three free patterns!

And folks who donate more than $100 ... they'll get a copy of every single pattern in my shop FOR FREE!

I'm also going to be donating 100% of the proceeds from sales in both the Ravelry shop and the Etsy shop to this campaign during the month of June, so you can help out by purchasing something as well!

So let's get this party started - head on over to my charity: water page, make a donation, and help me reach my goal! As the month goes on, I'll be sharing updates here on the blog, giving out some fun extra prizes as I can {and as we hit certain milestones!} and so much more - and all this in addition to our regularly scheduled programming!
