Mountains Cowl

Pattern: Mountains Cowl, by Julie King (free!!)
Yarn: Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable (279 yds / 100 g; 100% acrylic) I used 75% of the skein, approximately
Hook: I hook / 5.5 mm hook
(my project page on Ravelry)

I originally bought this skein of yarn to make some baby bonnets, but then it just sort of sat, and sat, and ..... sat. I'm on a big "use what I've got" kick again, so I grabbed this skein and decided to find a pattern for it, or just donate it.

The Mountains Cowl is a wonderful pattern, with instructions on making the smaller cowl (which I made), or a larger cowl that can be double wrapped around your neck. Because of my yardage, I made the smaller cowl, and I'm in love with it!

The only modification I made to this cowl was in how long I made it. I cast on the correct number of stitches and worked the pattern for every row. However, I didn't stop when the instructions said, instead just continuing the pattern until I had a super chunky and long cowl. It's not quite long enough to wear as a hood, and while I contemplated making it long enough for hood-wearing, I know I'd never wear it that way, and then it would be a bit too bulky for my neck and so it would never get worn.

As it is now, it's the perfect length, and I really couldn't be happier! Of course, now the weather is nice enough not to need a cowl, but I've put it in the winter bin so I can wear it as soon as the weather turns cold, which I'm sure will happen far before I'm ready!

The best part? This is a great pattern for charity donations, and I've already got some skeins earmarked in my stash for this pattern! Expect to see more of these on my Instagram feed in the coming months for sure!
