Do you remember this day? I sure do - it was the day I completed my Hat-Tember goal and made 30 hats in 30 days!

Back in August, my friend Joel Runyan commited to building a school through Pencils Of Promise. This meant he was commiting to raising $25,000 in just five months! As part of raising the money, he committed to running an ultra-marathon - that's just crazy pants to me! Almost immediately folks jumped on board, starting their own "Impossible Projects" to help raise moeny.

For my part, I committed to making a hat a day in September - 30 hats, 30 days. All the hats were sent to the St. Cyprian's branch of the Chicago Food Pantry, and I asked folks to donate $25 per hat - that would mean I'd raise $750 for the project.

September came, went, I made a hat each day, and folks donated in amazing numbers! However, I have yet to reach my goal. I'm currently sitting at $550 - just $200 away from my goal. And with Joel's goal just $6,000 short - and 22 days to finish raising the money - I'm asking folks if they won't join in the challenge and help me (and Joel!) build a school!

 If you've already donated, that's so amazing and I want to say thank you so much! For those of you that are new to this space, and as such new to the project, won't you consider taking a look back through the Hat-Tember archives, checking out all the hats I made, and consider helping us build a school in Guatemala? Even $5 would help immensely!

reaching my hat-tember goal

Dec 10, 2012

Can you believe Hat-Tember 2012 is already over?! While I'm happy to be knitting and crocheting other things now (working with the same hat pattern for a full month can get a bit repetitive, to be sure!)

I am still in awe of the fact that I actually did it! I'm super excited to get back into the swing of things, and just in time for fall no less! There's holidays to plan for, fun craft projects with the little now that he's starting to be big enough for them, different hat patterns to try ... so many exciting plans and lists already brewing I can't even begin to express my excitement!

But before I jump into October and fall, there are so many things I want to remember from Hat-Tember 2012!

I want to remember the excitement of starting the project.

I want to remember gathering all my yarn, and Owen helping by tossing it all back out of the yarn box as fast as I could stuff it in!

 I want to remember Zach's face when i asked him to take a set of photos every day for a month!

 I want to remember just how good my husband is at taking pictures. I take that for granted, but this little blog wouldn't run as well without him snapping photos like he does!

I want to remember carrying yarn and a crochet hook with me everywhere - to work, in the car, family gatherings, even a weekend away.

 I want to remember the days when it was hard - a sick kiddo, days so hot I didn't even want to be outside much less wearing a hat, and those dark circles from lack of sleep making me wish I could use Photoshop better!

 I want to remember Owen running around the yard while we took pictures each evening, and all the fun photos we have of him going down the slide, mowing the lawn and singing so loud.

I want to remember how easy it got to snap photos. We got into a rhythm and could knock out 10 shots or so in 30 seconds or less! Good to remember as we figure out how and when to take hat photos in the coming months.

I want to remember that I ended up crocheting 3990 yards of yarn!

I want to remember I can do impossible things. Crocheting a hat a day in September definitely did not seem like something I could do. I had a huge list of "must do's" that were going to get in the way (not to mention all sorts of things come up that I wasn't expecting), but every day I put hook to yarn and made a hat. Good reminder that I can do so much more than I think I can!

 //

Post inspired by the lovely posts that Elise Cripe and Ali Edwards did. These two always remind me to save my memories as often as I can - I'll thank myself for it someday!

 I've been loving using up some of the last bits of my acrylic on these lovely striped hats! I might just have to make myself one or two one this Hat-Tember project is over, they're so fun! I've added this striped hat to the shop ... well, not this EXACT striped hat, but you can purchase one just like it now! I've already been super blessed as a few of you have shown up to the shop and purchased a few hats from me, just in time for fall. If you're not a knitter, you might just find one perfect for yourself!

 I've loved crocheting this hat I decided to add it to my shop on a made-to-order basis! You can now purchase your very own three-stripe hat (named Luka) from the She Makes Hats shop, and choose whichever colors you'd like from my 30+ colors list! And with the holiday season fast approaching, I'll continue to add hats like this one to the shop over the next few weeks and months!

The end of the weekend is always a make-up free time for me. Truly most of this weekend was, but after so much going on it's nice to wash your face, do some laundry, snuggle while watching football (and drinking hot chocolate - yay!), unconcerned with how you look. Until you remember you're taking photos of yourself every day, and you haven't photographed today's hat yet. Oops! Thankfully, me without makeup usually just means me without mascara (I let my blemishes and one age spot show), so I don't think I look any different, just less eyelashes.

//

Just six days of hats left, and then I will have reached my goal of crocheting a hat a day for the Chicago Food Pantry! I'm still a bit short on my financial goal for Pencils Of Promise though - won't you hop over and donate if you're able?

is it unfair to say that this may be my favorite hat made so far? i love the earthy colors to be sure, but i mostly love the potential i see in a hat with these kinds of stripes. i'd love one for myself in super dark grey with avocado green stripes, and i'd love to see one in grey shades worked up, or with pink stripes or blue .... the possibilities truly are endless!

 i've still got quite a ways to go on the fundraising front, with $400 left to raise, but i believe whole-heartedly that the money will show up just in time, and i'll reach my goal of sending 30 kids to school for a year before the beginning of October. if you haven't donated yet, even $5 will do so much good ... don't shy away if $25 seems like a huge sum to you. in truth, it does to me as well!

i've been messing with the blog layout again, in anticipation of this Hat-Tember project being over and getting back to "regular" blogging. i'm excited to share bunches of Hats On People hats, our new Designer Of The Month, and even some new crafty projects i've been saving for fall!

i've got a few fun round-ups brewing as well, in anticipation of fall, Halloween and even the upcoming holiday season! with so much swirling around in my mind, i'm reminding myself to head back to my crochet hook and yarn and work on what's in front of me, this very important task.

"Love and belonging are irreducible needs of all men, women, and children. We’re hardwired for connection— it’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives. The absence of love, belonging, and connection always leads to suffering."
I have been tossed asunder by this quote, from Brene Brown's new book Daring Greatly. Written in just the first chapter, I am already broken open. This is why all the hats, folks. Connection. Two needles or a hook, some yarn and some time, and I connect myself to another person. Whether I meet that person or not, whether that person even knows my name, I am sharing this gift with them. I am saying You are IMPORTANT. You are LOVED. You are WORTHY. You are CARED FOR. Because they are. Because you are.

Day 15 - halfway through Hat-Tember! I can't believe we're already to the 50% mark, that I've made it this far without missing a day (or a beat)! I folded the hat brim today to give a different look! Still using the same hat pattern, and loving that it's as versatile as this! I've been so blown away at how folks have shown up and donated to the Pencils Of Promise fundraiser as well!

So far this project has raised $350 - almost halfway to my goal of $750! With just 15 days left however, the real fundraising needs to begin in earnest! I've got $400 left to raise and just over two weeks to do it! If you haven't donated yet, I encourage you to click the "Donate Now" link below. Even if you can donate $5 or $10, it will help me reach my goal of sending 30 kids to school for a year. If you've already donated, I'd love it if you can help me spread the word about this project.

By sharing about Hat-Tember on Twitter and Facebook, you can help me reach my goal and let your family, friends and followers know you care about an amazing cause! To make things super easy, you can copy and paste this to your Twitter or Facebook to spread the word!

The top picture? That's how we spend a good chunk of our days lately. Owen's turned into quite the acrobat (in his own mind at least!) and he loves to flip upside down, backwards, and over shoulders, couches and coffee tables!

Hope you have a happy weekend! Owen and I will be watching the Huskers, hopefully seeing Dad and Owen's cousin Joshua, who will be AT THE GAME!
